Decode printer error codes on the panel

Codes map to a subsystem: paper path, consumables, fuser or logic board. Identify the family first.

   Write the exact code down

   Include letters and all digits, e.g. E-02 is not the same as 0x02.

2. 2

   Identify the family

   Canon 5xxx are mechanical, Epson 0x codes are carriage or ink pads, Kyocera C-codes are service level, Ricoh SC codes are engine faults.

3. 3

   Try the standard reset

   Power off, unplug 60 seconds, reseat consumables, power on. This clears most transient codes.

4. 4

   Check consumable counters

   End-of-life messages for drums, fusers and waste ink pads need a part replacement or a service reset.

5. 5

   Know when to stop

   Repeated service codes after a reset mean a hardware fault. Book a technician rather than forcing the machine.
